After a disappointing result in the league match on Saturday the CRICKET first team regrouped and headed off to Mochdre on Sunday morning. Cheered on by a huge Neston contingent the boys had to play Longton in the first semi-final of the Area 20/20 finals.
Despite the fact that the game started at 10.30am the strong Neston outfit batted superbly on a tricky wicket and large outfield. Luke Camden hit an excellent 76, backed up by Jacko's steady 49, which enabled us to post a very respectable 149.
Steady bowling, backed up by some superb catching, meant that the opposition were never really in with a shout and by the time the now expected monsoon rain arrived the game was all but over. Still needing 44 off nine balls the umpires called a halt to proceedings before floating off into the river Conwy!
After being rescued by the RNLI the umpires decided that enough was enough and called a halt to the whole days proceedings. This was a disappointing end for Mochdre CC, who had made a great effort in staging the day and the Neston team and supporters who had to leave their beds before sunrise! Most affected though were the Mochdre CC BBQ ladies who had ordered an extra supply of burgers after hearing Dave Manchett was on the NCC bus!
All of the above means that we have to return to Mochdre this Sunday to play the winners of the match between the hosts and Tamworth. The final is again due to start at 4pm and the prize is a home fixture in the very last qualification match, the winners of this will then head to Edgbaston for the National Finals!
Congratulations also to DCI Egerton's Over 40's squad who have also won their regional league, and will now play in the finals day on August Bank Holiday Monday.
Further details will follow shortly and can be found on the Cricket Section website.
