TENNIS TEAMS PRODUCE STUNNING SEASON FINALE

With our 'heatwave' Summer just another dismal memory from the Met. Office, one of the major rays of sunshine has come from the TENNIS section. After entering a fifth team at the beginning of the season hopes were high for a good set of results. Even the most optimistic however could not have hoped for the success that has been achieved. The first team secured the 1st Division Championship for the first team in many years, and the third and fifth teams also secured promotion in their respective divisions. The fifth teams finish to the season was amazing as the title went down to the last set of the last match against long term leaders Birkenhead. Dave and Kate Price won the last match 2 - 1 to secure the league by one point and a lucrative photo deal with OK magazine!

Results on the CRICKET pitches have been mixed but three of our four teams do still have a chance or winning their respective leagues, or gaining promotion. The 1st XI have struggled to maintain their early season form and have slipped to third in the table although with just four games remaining the title is still well within reach. Their form on the Cup front however is still solid and on the 29th August they entertain Alderley Edge in the Cheshire Cup semi-final at Parkgate. The incentive to win this is huge as the winners will play the final on their home ground.

On Bank Holiday Monday the Silverbacks will defend their title at Warrington in the over 40's final day. They start with a semi-final match against Toft but will sorely miss the groups senior gorilla, Bob Yardley, who once again misses the big day as the 2010/2011 European Seniors Bridge Tour starts that weekend. Bob, entering his 27th year as a senior Bridge pro (qualifying age of 50), hopes to watch the game live by satellite link from his Dubai hotel.

The SQUASH and RACKET BALL seasons start again soon with some interesting developments between the two codes. A number of 'senior' squash players have realised just how good a game RB is and how much easier it is on 'ageing' joints. Following a number of Squash v Racket ball matches Club Captain, Den Davies, is expecting a number of high profile signings! His only concern is the lightweight nature of the squash players in the bar department. Watch this space...

And so to the bar...

Unfortunately the football season is on us already with Manchester United's march to a record 19th title underway. Liverpool are performing tonight in the 22nd qualifying round of the Europy Cup and again on Monday night when they travel to Manchester City in the Premiership. Both games will be on LIVE at the Club.

A couple of events for your diary are the Presidents Dinner which will take place in October, and the return of the very Popular band 'JUST' who will be performing again on November 27th. Please let me know if you would like to reserve tickets for either event.

Many of you turned out on last Sunday to welcome a hardy bunch of cyclists who are pedalling their way around the entire British mainland to raise money for Prostate Cancer. As ever the Club lived up to its reputation as a 'Centre for Sporting and Social Excellence' and looked after the visitors royally. Have a look at the links below.

NCC HOST ENGLAND PLAYERS PAST AND FUTURE

During the week the Club will have no doubt played host to a number of future England players with the arrival of the Bunbury Festival. Boys up to the age of fifteen have been taking part in a series of 50 over matches as part of the annual festival. Forty eight boys who have previously taken part in the festival have gone on to represent England including greats such as Flintoff, Vaughan and Atherton. David English, who many senior England players regard as 'the godfather of English cricket', was also in attendance bringing an added 'Rock and Roll' atmosphere to the day.

On Thursday the attention turns to the past and some of Englands great players who return to the Club for another match against a Neston Select XI. The England team will be looking for revenge after suffering a defeat last year, with Derek Randall particularly looking to make a big impression. The OLD ENGLAND v NESTON match starts at 2pm. As ever the bar will be open and a BBQ will be in operation during the match. Payment can be made on the gate. As with previous big events please leave your car at home if you live locally.

The TENNIS season is drawing to a close with just a few rearranged games to be played over the coming days. The season has been a great success with a number of trophies and promotions already in the bag. A full round up will follow in the next couple of weeks detailing all the excellent achievements.

The CRICKET teams have seen mixed results over the past few weeks with the first team suffering a major drop in league form. Hopefully this is just a blip and they will return to winning ways this Saturday. On the Cup front the team has progressed smoothly to the Cheshire Cup semi-final which is due to be played shortly. Please keep an eye on the cricket section website for match information as it may well take place on a Friday.

The date for the Club AGM will be announced shortly and will take place in September. You will receive details of this over the coming weeks.

Until next time

WORLD CUP CAUSES CHAOS IN THE SPORTING WORLD

England's failure to follow Italy and France out of the World Cup after the group stages has left the rest of the sporting world in meltdown. Domestic cricket and Rugby matches have been postponed or delayed, and recent breaking news from our own teams is that the men's CRICKET first team match on Sunday has also been postponed!

Despite this mayhem it is fantastic news for all those people who have shares in large brewery companies and the small family business in Foggathorpe, East Riding, who hold the UK patent for the Vuvuzela.

Due to the 'Greenness' of the England team, the first knockout match will now be played on Sunday afternoon against the minnows of Germany rather than the might of Ghana on Saturday evening. The BIG SCREEN will be down and dangling in the Cranston from 2.30pm. There is a christening on Sunday afternoon but they have kindly agreed to move into the Sports Bar so please bring a present down for young Toby. (No Vuvuzela's!)

Don't forget tonight's cricket match between the Presidents XI, sponsored by Tubigrip, and Delia's all conquering ladies team. The game is due to start at 6pm with the first pulled muscle expected at ten past!

Marquee week is nearly with us with Billy Smart erecting his tent from Sunday onwards. As usual all volunteers will be greatly welcomed for however small a period.

Until next time

ENGLAND TO PLAY ALGERIA LIVE IN THE CRANSTON

After last Saturday's draw with the USA, England's next game against Algeria takes on much greater significance. Not only must England win, but they must win well as anything else could see them finish runners up in the group. This would almost certainly result in a knock out meeting with Germany a week on Sunday. The BIG SCREEN will be in action tomorrow night from 7.30pm for the match. Make sure you arrive early to grab your spot and to take in some pre-match food from HEATHER and LORNA who will be on hand if you are heading down straight from work.

On Saturday the action moves back to our own playing surfaces with the CRICKET first team playing at home after a two week break. Two good results in the last fortnight have left the boys well clear at the top of the table. They will be hoping to continue in their rich vein of form when they host Hyde this weekend. On Sunday the boys will attempt to complete their Cheshire Cup match against Cheadle Hulme which was rained off last Sunday. Weather permitting there will be a BBQ on both days so why not come down and celebrate a 4 - 1 England win from Friday night!

Prior to the cricket on Sunday the action served up on the TENNIS courts comes courtesy of the ladies who are just one step away from the final of the Cheshire Shield. At 11am they entertain Ryecroft in the semi-finals and all support will be very welcome.

Another pending date for your diary is Friday the 25th June. Club legend Delia Heginbottom has audaciously challenged the President to a cricket match on the from pitch. The ladies will take on an all star, non cricketing Prezzies XI which is rumoured to include names such as Jenkins, Bush, Tweedie and Brooker. Please can ALL first aiders be in attendance with ice, slings, bandages etc!! The game is expected to start at 6pm with as many hecklers as possible on the balcony!

Until next week

CAN ENGLAND DO THE DOUBLE?!

Unless you are going on holiday to a desert island for the next month you have very little chance of avoiding the FIFA World Cup which starts this week. With the Neston teams performing superbly on our local courts and pitches, can our football team match the Cricket T20 side and bring the cup home? Further details of England's 'initial' matches are detailed later in the bulletin.

After a winning draw against second place Alderley Edge the men's CRICKET first team remain top of the table, 34 points ahead of their nearest rivals. Jack Smith once again top scored with an excellent 94, ably assisted by Sam MacPherson (82) after a recent name change! After a solid start (95 for 0) the hosts were pegged back by some great bowling and fielding and had to halt the chase eight wickets down and 28 runs short.

Despite another bout of late withdrawals the TENNIS teams continue to perform well in their respective leagues. The first team lead the way and returned to the top of the table after a convincing win against previous leaders Wallasey Manor. Special mention goes to veteran Ali Smith who returned to the team temporarily from the bunkers/bushes/rough/OB's of Royal Liverpool!

After the great success of midweek Summer hockey the section have started a Sunday afternoon social match for all players, male or female. If anybody would like to have a game please contact Lawrence McNeight for further details.

And so to the bar...

As previously mentioned the FIFA World Cup starts this week with Englands first match on Saturday night against the USA. Unfortunately somebody has decided to get married on Saturday so the game will be shown live but only in the SPORTS BAR. The second game takes place on Friday the 18th against Algeria at 7.30pm. There are no functions that evening so the game will be live on the BIG SCREEN in the CRANSTON as well as the SPORTS BAR. The final group match takes place the following Wednesday (23rd) at 3pm. For all those who intend booking a dental appointment that afternoon please let me know! If there is enough interest the bar will be open for a CRANSTON BIG SCREEN viewing.

The Marquee week is nearly upon us again - starting on Thursday 1st July with the Sportsmans Lunch. The SUMMER BALL on Saturday the 3rd is sure to be the best ever with the return of the superb BYKER GROOVE who performed two tears ago. There are a number of tables still available but they are selling fast. Please contact me ASAP if you wish to reserve yours.

Until next week

BENNETT MAKES WELCOME RETURN BUT MIDGES NOT SO!

The TENNIS teams continue to make serious headway in their respective Wirral Leagues with another clean sweep for all five sides. Despite a number of late withdrawals the teams rallied superbly to record convincing victories. The fourth team had the closest scare but pulled through in the end after some tense ties. Veteran Dave Bennett made a winning returning to Tuesday night tennis after many decades away. Dave puts his long lasting ability, skill and stamina down to many years of Thursday night social tennis, Guest Ales, Nigel Jarratt's curries (made by his wife) and eleven consecutive seasons of avoiding playing with Eddie Byrnes! One not so welcome return came from our world famous midges who seem to have got worse than ever (Is this possible?!) The reason for these swarms have baffled specialists from all over the globe and numerous attempts to thwart them have failed. Another Thursday night veteran Bruce Lindsay does appear to have found the answer but will not tell anybody what aftershave he uses.

The CRICKET teams suffered a mixed weekend with the major highlight being the 1st XI's home fixture against Champions Oulton Park. The Champions, a highly professional outfit as ever, won the toss and decided to bat on a flat dry wicket. The toss was about the only thing that went their way all day as the Neston bowlers made early inroads into the top order from which they never looked like recovering. The Neston batsmen had no problems in chasing down a paltry target before retiring to the bar and drinking the oppositions beer! The result keeps the boys on top of the table and gives them great confidence for another tough fixture this Saturday away at Bowdon.

Despite being in the 'off' season, the RACKETBALL players are planning well in advance for an assault on next seasons title. The section continues to grow at pace with new players, 'experienced' players and squash players defecting to a new shaped racket and bigger ball! Practise nights are on Wednesdays (5.30pm - 7.30pm) and on Sundays (6pm - 8pm) The guys and girls are extremely sociable and play at all standards. Please feel free to come down on either of the nights and have a hit and a drink.

And so to the bar...

The bar opens at 3pm on Saturday however on Sunday the bar opens at 1pm when all of you are invited to the PRESIDENTS SPRING PARTY. Complimentary nibbles and a glass of wine have been laid on so we hope to see you all at some stage during the afternoon.

On Saturday 29th May '1 - Stop - Boogie' will be playing at the Club again and will be performing Abba and 80's sets. Please contact on below details for tickets.

On Bank Holiday Monday we have a fabulous days cricket in store when Lancashire 2nd XI will play a 20/20 match against either Durham or Yorkshire. The game will actually consist of two innings each of twenty overs and starts at 11am. The bar will be open and a BBQ will be available during the day. Tickets are just £2 for adults and £1 for children payable on the gate. Attendance is expected to be very high so it is recommended that all those within walking distance leave their cars at home!

Until next week

NEWSFLASH!

UNEXPECTED TURN OF EVENTS LEADS TO WORLD CUP SUNDAY!

After an extraordinary performance in the Caribbean our cricketers have made it through to the final of the 20/20 World Cup. Despite being ranked just one place above the Isle of Man over sixties 20/20 side, our boys have played some great cricket in reaching the final. The game is live on SKY on Sunday afternoon from 4.30pm and will be live on the big screen.

The above does depend whether Trevor Thomas has managed to remove his team of stable girls from the previous evenings Race Night - the form guide is not good!!

For those wishing to attend the Race Night on Saturday there are a few places remaining in Tattershalls - please let me know asap if you would like a seat.

Don't forget the kind offer of a nibble from the President on Sunday 23rd from 1pm. Mr Wallis will also be offering a complimentary glass of wine to all those who would like to listen to his masterclass session on 'The Art of the Drop Shot'.

Tickets for the ABBA and 80's night on Saturday 29th May are selling quickly so please contact me by return to secure yours.

All members please note that another local business has come on board with a 10% off deal. Wirral Sports in Birkenhead are pleased to give this reduction to all members on production of their membership card.

CLEAN SWEEP FOR CRICKETERS AS 'SUMMER' RETURNS

After some glorious early season weather the cold and rain returned to the area but this did not dampen Neston's spirits. Following in the footsteps of the tennis teams the previous Tuesday, the four men's CRICKET teams all secured excellent wins last Saturday. The first team won comfortably against Toft with Brad Rasool (87*) once again showing his obvious class in chasing down a modest target of 150. There were three wickets a piece for Jordan Free and James Hawley and a couple for Neston's very own Jacques Kallis, Wayne Greve. GLS's second team kicked started their season with a win away at Toft whilst the third team secured a six wicket win at Brooklands. The fourth team triumphed in their derby against Oxton with Master Electrician Kurt Sturzy hitting an electrifying 95. On Sunday the second and third teams both progressed in their respective cup competitions.

At the time of going to press there was only one result in from the TENNIS teams which was a 15 - 4 home victory for the third team. Despite celebrating her thirty third birthday Sally Cole turned out for the side and partnered Sarah White to a comfortable victory. Sally then joined up with Tony Lydiate in a marathon match that seriously delayed her birthday celebrations and as a result almost halved the expected bar take! Don't forget that the tennis section take to the car parks again this Saturday with the next CAR BOOT SALE. For further details please contact Jo Race on 336 2014.

Despite being in the middle of the summer seasons the unusual, but most welcome sound of ball on backboard was heard on Wednesday night. For the hockey aficionado's this obviously means that Rich Lowry Jnr has returned in goal for a Neston side in the Summer Leagues! Hockey matches can be seen on the astro every Wednesday night from now until the 21st July - just don't tell Eddie!

And so to the bar...

There are a host of events on the horizon which all members and guests are welcome to attend. Please see below for details

Saturday 15th May - Race Night in the Cranston

Sunday 16th May - Superstars Pentathlon

Sunday 23rd May - Presidents Party in the Cranston 1pm - Be sure to come down and enjoy a drink and light nibbles with the President and hear all about his most successful squash season to date!

Saturday 29th May - ABBA and 80's night in the Cranston from 8pm.

For details of all these events please contact me ON THE E-MAIL BELOW or on the Club number 0151 336 4199

Until next week

CLEAN SWEEP FOR TENNIS TEAMS ON FIRST NIGHT OF SEASON

The TENNIS teams produced a stunning start to the season with victories for all five teams on the opening night. Despite a number of incidents before during and after the matches, including a car shunt, sprained joints and bars closing early the teams powered to a clean sweep and are clearly going to be a force to be reckoned with. Special mentions go to Sarah Fearnley, on her return to team tennis, and partner Susan Tomlinson who won a marathon three setter in well over two hours! Melinda Totty produced a brave performance to also win in three despite suffering a wrist injury during the match. Condolences to Pete Hardy who lost in three in the early hours of Wednesday only to find that the Port Sunlight bar had closed. Pete has requested only home matches in future! Many of you will have seen the magnificent condition of the grass courts which are now open for use. Please be aware of the usual wet weather and early morning rules to ensure they remain in peak condition.

Please note the Section is holding another car boot sale on Saturday 8th May.

Despite a fantastic century from new boy Brad Rasool the first team lost on Saturday at local rivals Oxton. In trouble at 38 for 4 Brad, and another new recruit Luke Camden set about repairing the damage before Andy Roberts joined in and helped set a commanding score of 282 for 6. Despite some early problems with the new ball Oxton's batsmen set about their task with relish and secured a three wicket win. The second team lost again but a magnificent game could have gone either way with the boys still managing to pick up a useful point haul. Both the third and fourth teams secured good victories with Bob 'Omar' Yardley returning to the fold after a five month marathon SAGA Bridge holiday in Kazakhstan.

And so to the bar...

A busy weekend at the Club kicks off with a Junior Hockey Presentation Evening in the Cranston on Friday. On Saturday the Squash Section are holding a 'Curry & Price' evening with the Radio City celebrity and on Sunday there is a private function in the Cranston. The Sports Bar will be open at 1.30pm to allow people to watch Liverpool lose tamely and hand the title to Chelsea.

MARQUEE WEEK

As ever the small band of volunteers are well under way with the preparations for this years event with the SPORTSMAN'S LUNCH already sold out and the BALL also heading that way. If you would like a table at the Ball please contact Mel Strong(336 5082) ASAP to avoid disappointment. This year we welcome back BIKER GROOVE to the stage after their scintillating performance a couple of years ago.

Tickets for the ABBA and Eighties night on the 29th May are also selling fast with only a small proportion remaining. Your section promoters do have some for distribution or alternatively please contact me on the address below. Until next week

BRAD 'SMASHES' HIS WAY TO FIRST HUNDRED

On an unusually glorious Sunday afternoon the CRICKET season got underway at Parkgate with a couple of friendly matches for the first and second teams. Highlight of the day came from our new overseas player, Brad Rasool, who scored a great century on the front pitch. Unfortunately the innings did come at a cost as a poor chap who was spending the day in Parkgate with his family found himself in need of a new windscreen when one of Brad's bigger hits landed in his lap! With the forecast set fair for the weekend local rivals Chester Boughton Hall cruise into town for the first league match of the season. The game starts at 12.30pm so be sure to arrive early to avoid missing any further fireworks.

The TENNIS league season gets ever nearer with the first matches taking place on Tuesday 27th April. Anybody wishing to try out for the teams should pop down on a Tuesday night when all the squads will be in action. The ever social social teams and the Wednesday afternoon ladies matches are also due to start shortly. Details of how to take part can be found on the sections website. Friday night club night starts this evening when all are welcome to enjoy a sociable game of tennis and an even more sociable drink after!

And so to the bar...........

The bar will be open from 3pm on Saturday's throughout the summer, and weather permitting our excellent catering team will be putting on a BBQ every Saturday from around 4.30pm. On the off chance there is any rain this summer the girls will still be providing an indoor based menu similar to the one they provided over the winter. On Sunday's the bar will open at 4pm unless there are any Cranston functions or other major attractions on during the day. Please check the Manager's Diary on the website for details. During the week we will shortly be selling a selection of sandwiches from behind the bar. Full details to follow.

Tickets for the Band Night on the 29th May are now available. '1 Stop Boogie', who have played at private functions for a couple of Club members, will be playing two sets on the night. The first set will be an ABBA based tribute followed by another hour of 80's favourites. Tickets can be obtained from your section representatives or on the e-mail below. Please note the last Band Night was a sell out within weeks so please book your tickets asap!

Until next week

SUCCESS STORIES KEEP ROLLING IN!

As the winter seasons draw to a close further major successes at Neston CC make the headlines again.

The men's HOCKEY first team finally gained promotion after a long hard season that went down to the wire. There were no visible nerves as the boys travelled to Liverpool University, and this showed on the pitch with a convincing 7 - 2 win. Affirmation of their promotion did not come until later in the day when it was discovered that the results of the teams around them confirmed that they would be playing North Division Hockey next season. Cue scenes of wild euphoria at the end of season dinner later that evening. Special congratulations must go to Lawrence McNeight, not just a goal scoring phenomenon, and Kenny Gardiner, not a goal scoring phenomenon, who were awarded the Club Person and Chairman's Cup respectively at the dinner. These guys are what NSWHC and Neston CC are all about giving huge amounts of time and effort to the cause. Despite the fact that both are ardent Liverpool supporters, and continually harangue the Club Manager, they carry out numerous duties with the minimum of fuss. Well done guys! Numerous other people throughout the section have also played their part in making this season, with our brand new astro, such a great success. Roll on 2010/2011.

Moving inside the men's SQUASH first team secured an excellent victory at Warrington last Sunday to win the Cheshire Challenge Cup. The boys produced a magnificent all round performance against a team with home advantage and good support. A full, unbiased and extremely modest report can be found on the squash forum http://nestonsquash.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general

Last nights league fixtures gave Warrington the immediate chance of gaining revenge when the boys once again travelled up the M56. Knowing a victory would give them a fantastic chance of promotion they, once again turned on the style to inflict another defeat on the home side.

Even more success came last night from DCI Egerton's second team who went into a tough match knowing that a fourteen point haul would give them promotion. The oppo, New Brighton 3's, were themselves lying fourth in the table and had beaten Neston in the first half of the season. Fortress Neston proved a bridge too far however, and the boys ran out comfortable 4 - 1 winners and in the process gained eighteen points and promotion.

And so to the bar...

With the SIX NATIONS now over for another season all attentions turn to the race for the FA Premiership and for many, the race for the final Champions League place. On Saturday at 5.15pm Bolton entertain Manchester United live and exclusive on ESPN. Can Bolton dent United's chances of a record breaking 19th title? For all adults in the bar before the start of the game there will be a free GOLDEN GOAL competition.

On Sunday at 4pm Liverpool entertain Sunderland knowing that victory is paramount in the race for fourth place.  The match will be live from the start but please note that all viewers will be searched on arrival for red beach balls!

On Thursday 1st April Lee Molden will be attending the Thursday group gathering at 2pm. Would you like to know more about your signed paintings and artwork? If so Lee is your man. He will not be valuing your goods but on the day before the Antique Valuers will be back in town between 12.30pm and 4.30pm.

On Monday the 5th April the Club is hosting a craft fair from 10am until 4pm. All members and guests are welcome to come and peruse the many stalls that will be in the tea room and the Cranston.

As you are aware our door entry and till system requires the use of a plastic swipe card. The initial card is provided free and is used to gain entry to the building, and for certain discounts on the till. Trying to find your card when entering the building can be awkward if it is in your wallet, purse or sports bag. We now have the opportunity to provide proximity key fobs which at this stage can be used to open the door. (If this proves popular the tills can also be updated). These fobs, hung from your key cars, provide a much simpler and efficient way of opening the door. Unfortunately the Club, due to the cost of the fobs, would not be able to provide these free but if anybody is interested in buying one please let me know on the address below.

And finally, are you aware of our discount notice board at the Club? As a member you not only receive a discount on alcoholic drinks at our bar, but also on many products and services provided locally. 10% off your bill at the Britannia Spice (T&C apply), 10% off purchases at Marsh Nurseries in Parkgate, reduced rates on a range of holiday homes both here and abroad and further reduced rates on Car Servicing & MOT's, property cleaning, garden maintenance and much more. Please see the board by squash court one.

HOCKEY MEN ON THE VERGE - LADIES JUST MISS OUT

With just one match remaining the men's hockey first team are on the verge of promotion after a 3 - 3 draw at Tameside. This leaves the men in third place, three points ahead of their nearest promotion rivals, with the teams in first and second unable to go up. The sides below us do have a game in hand but both have to play champions elect Bowdon. Unfortunately the ladies slim chance of promotion ended with an unexpected defeat at home to Runcorn. Result of the day came from the men's second team who thrashed Southport 15 - 0 with Jason Long scoring eight!

On Sunday our team's suffered a double disappointment in their cup fixtures with both the men's second team, and the mixed side bowing out of their respective competitions to very strong opposition.

There were some excellent results on the squash courts last week, the most impressive coming from the ladies first team. The girls entertained Grove Park, who only need a handful of points to secure the title, and inflicted their first defeat of the season on them. This should guarantee the ladies the runners up spot in Division 1.

The racket ball season is drawing to a close however we are very privileged to be holding the end of season Challenge Match which sees the league champions take on a 'Best of the Rest' team. Unfortunately Den Davies is injured for the event but will be donning his apron instead to cater for our guests. All members are welcome to come and watch some high quality games from 7pm on Tuesday 23rd March.

And so to the bar...

Top quality sporting TV comes to our screens this week, as well as Liverpool playing Lille tomorrow night in a Europy Cup second leg match. On Saturday the attention switches back to the Six Nations and for English fans a home match against France at 7.45pm. The game will be shown live in the Sports Bar but the BIG SCREEN will be out of action with the Hockey Section celebrating their end of season with a dinner in the Cranston. Ireland play Scotland at 5pm whilst Wales play Italy at 2.30pm. On Sunday Manchester United host Liverpool in the Premier League at 1.30pm, again the match will be live in the Sports Bar.

The bar will open at 3pm on Saturday and 1.30pm on Sunday.

PLEASE NOTE ON SUNDAY THAT THE CLUB IS HOSTING THE SPORT RELIEF MILE. MANY OF YOU WILL BE TAKING PART OR CHEERING ON FRIENDS. WITH OVER 200 COMPETITORS EXPECTED THE CAR PARK WILL BE FULL TO THE SEAMS. FOR ALL THOSE WITHIN WALKING DISTANCE PLEASE LEAVE YOUR CAR AT HOME AS YOU MAY NOT GET IT BACK UNTIL MONDAY!!

Tickets are already flying out for the 'One Stop Boogie' band night on the 29th May. Please let me know asap if you wish to reserve yours.

The SQUASH section are holding a 'Curry and Price' evening on Saturday may 1st. Radio City DJ and funny man Pete Price will be hosting the event, further details for which are available from Steve Egerton 07764906750, Justin Hussey 07770478767 or on the e-mail address below.

On Monday 5th April the Club will be hosting a Craft Fair from 10am until 4pm. For further information, or to book a table, please contact Michelle on 0151 625 2286 or 07790111750.

Finally, back by popular demand, Tony Bush and his eggheads have arranged another quiz night. This will take place on Friday 16th April in the Cranston. Please contact Tony for further details or see the Hockey section website.

POTENTIAL HONOURS APLENTY AS SEASON DRAWS TO A CLOSE

With just a handful of games left for our winter teams, a host of them remain in strong positions in their respective leagues.

On the astro the men's HOCKEY first team notched up another close win on Saturday with a 3 - 2 victory over Preston. With just two games remaining the boys are two points clear of their 'eligible' promotion rivals although they have played a game more. The ladies first team, after an indifferent start to the season, have powered their way into second place after a string of superb performances. Timperley in third place, two points behind the girls, do have two games in hand but if the Shrimpettes win on Saturday they will have the points on the board putting sever pressure on Timpers. Their were mixed results for the remaining teams on Saturday however the Beavers continue to dominate the junior scene with a 4 - 1 victory over Deeside. On Saturday they travel to Bowdon who your reporter believes are the only side to have inflicted a defeat on the boys this season!

Moving inside the SQUASH sides go from strength to strength. The men's 1st and 2nd teams and the ladies first team remain unbeaten since Christmas! In a very competitive league the men's 1st team stand fifth but if they win their game in hand they could go third, just two points off a promotion place. DCI Egerton's 2nd team sit second in their league and do have the top team to play on the last game of the season. The ladies first team have performed brilliantly in the second half of the season and could secure runners up spot after recently beating old rivals Bowdon. On Monday the girls entertain runaway leaders Grove Park but will be confident that they can reverse the first half result.

Moving back outside the men's Winter League TENNIS team are hitting top form as they approach the run in. The boys have produced some excellent recent victories helped by steady performances from Paul 'Inspector Gadget' Anderson and Gerry 'United did us again' Kirby. Ken Patrick just gets better and better and Dave Price has put behind him the two heavy defeats the team suffered when he stood in as captain!

And so to the bar................

On Saturday the SIX NATIONS returns with Ireland hosting Wales at 2.30pm and England travelling to Scotland at 5pm. Unfortunately the Big Screen will not be in action this weekend so arrive early to book your seats in the Sports Bar.

A fantastic evenings entertainment was had by all a couple of weeks ago when 'Just' appeared for their first sell out gig at the Club. They will be returning on the 27th of November after popular demand. Before their encore another group will be performing here for the second time on the 29th May. 'One Stop Boogie' appeared here at a private function last year but locals 'ear-wigging' in the Sports Bar said sign them up! Further details will follow shortly and tickets will be available soon but please let me know if you wish to reserve yours. Have a look at their website www.onestopboogie.co.uk

The potential for a 'Strictly Come Dancing' entrant from NCC gets ever nearer as the Monday Salsa nights attract more and more interest. It has yet to be confirmed but hockey legend Phil 'Snake Hips' McKeown is rumoured to be leaving his regular Monday night crochet lessons to take up dancing! Why not join him on the dance floor?

'The Club's on-line shop has recently added a number of items. The shop gives you the opportunity to purchase sweathirts, t-shirts, rugby tops, polo shirts, caps, wet weather jackets and much more. The quality of the clothing is high and the price very competitive which includes the addition of the Club logo. For a small additional charge you can add your own name or initials in case you forget who you are! Why not take a look on the website at http://nestoncricketclub.co.uk/onlineshop.aspx

WANDERING MINSTRELS RETURN BUT DAVIES TAKES THE PLAUDITS

After a narrow 3 - 2 victory in the last round with a 'weakened' side, the men's SQUASH first team entertained Grove Park last night. With Lea-Swain and Mason returning to the fold a comfortable victory was expected, particularly with GLS's 'creative' marking skills. Phil Birkett, one of last weeks heroes couldn't match his previous efforts, but Mason and Lea-Swain brushed aside their opponents with ease. Garry Davies prepared for his match with the usual professionalism and was unperturbed with the arrival of his opposite number. A previous winner of the Over 60's British Championship, although reports differ as to which decade, his oppo oozed class, style and athleticism. The only possible chink in his armour came in the form of a Capstan full strength packet in his bag! Garry's worst fears were realised in no time when he found himself two down in no time and facing a heavy defeat. The match turned in the third game with the news that the Grove Park player had forgotten his lighter and could not find matches anywhere. Seizing the moment Garry, not far from and over 60's application form himself, upped the pace and cruised to a famous victory.

After a small blip last week the men's HOCKEY first team returned to winning ways, but not before surrendering their usual commanding position. Once again the Neston side cruised into a three goal lead before allowing Wilmslow to get back into the match at 3 - 2. There were no further wobbles however and the boys stood firm to secure a vital 4 - 2 victory in their race for the Championship. There were mixed results for the other teams with performance of the day going to the fifth team who destroyed Macclesfield 8 - 0!

And so to the bar...

There is a feast of televisual delights over the next week starting on Friday evening with Wales taking on France in the Six Nations Rugby. This match is followed by England v Ireland on Saturday at 4pm. There is a private function in the CRANSTON on Saturday but the match will be live on the BIG SCREEN. The room will have to be vacated immediately after the match to allow the hosts to set up for the party.

On Sunday the League Cup Final takes place when Aston Villa take on Manchester United at 3pm. There is a function in the Cranston at lunchtime but the Sports Bar will be open for the match.

Both Liverpool and Everton play the second legs of their Europey League games tomorrow night. It would appear that we will be able to sample the delights of both matches as they kick off at 6pm and 8.05pm respectively. The BIG SCREEN will not be in action but again the Sports Bar will be open.

On the 4th March the Thursday group welcome Michael Corfe who will be presenting a humorous, illustrated talk on 'Creating a Garden'. All members and guests are welcome to come along to the Cranston at 2pm.

Until next week

NERVOUS TIMES AHEAD AFTER TOP OF THE TABLE CLASH

With just five games to play the men's HOCKEY 1st XI face a nail biting finish to the season after losing to second place Bowdon last weekend. With twenty minutes of the game gone Neston looked to be in full control and cruising to victory with a 3 - 0 advantage. Just fifteen minutes later the match was back in the balance with the visitors scoring three quick goals to level things up at half-time. More goals followed in the second half but it was Bowdon who came out on top with a 6 - 4 win. Neston remain top of the table but only three points now separate first and fourth. The third team were the only other side to lose with the other sides securing two wins and two draws. The Beavers brushed aside Timperley with an excellent 5 - 1 victory, and rumour has it they have no fixture this weekend due to a lack of sides that are brave enough to play them!! The ladies have a pamper weekend over half-term but did manage to lift themselves off the tanning beds to play in friendly match which ended 1 - 1.

Moving indoors the men's SQUASH first and second team continued their excellent post Christmas form to maintain their 2010 unbeaten records. Despite missing Mason and Lea Swain, stand in skipper Garry Davies led his troops to an excellent 3 - 2 victory over second placed Deeside. Three of the games went to the fifth with DCI Egerton and Chris Durband running out winners, whilst Andy Potter just missed out on an excellent victory. Chris came back from being 2 - 0 down against Club Coach Laurie Jones - one for the stewards there!

And so to the bar........

The bar will be open this Saturday from 12.30pm with the Everton v Manchester United match live on the screens. The Six Nations takes a break this weekend so if Wigan v Spurs, or Portsmouth v Stoke takes your fancy then the Club is the place to be!

Until next week

MAHOUT RETURNS TO SUCCESS ON AND OFF THE FIELD!

After a two week intensive elephant riding course in the sub-continent your reporter returned to more snow, great victories, proper beer and an attempt by Tony Bush to break the world record for attendees at a Sports Quiz!

The HOCKEY sides have continued to produce excellent results with the ladies and men's first teams leading the way. The men remain top of the table with just six games remaining and are five points clear of their nearest rivals. The ladies first team, who found themselves at the wrong end of the table early in the season, have shot up to third place after a steady run of victories. There is a slim chance of promotion but if they do not succeed this year confidence will be high for the next campaign. Scooby's second team have continued to improve in the league and are now safe from relegation. His troops have also made it to the semi-final of the H.A Cup after an excellent 3 - 2 victory against Chesterfield. There have been numerous wins for the other senior teams and as you would expect the Beavers and Badgers continue to sweep all opposition aside!

Off the pitch Tony Bush seriously tested the foundations of the new building when he held a Sports Quiz in the Cranston. There are no official figures for the total attendance but there were over 140 chairs counted the following morning. (Obviously Rich Lowry Jnr needs two). It came as no surprise that one of the winning teams contained two of the Peers clan (not Gareth and Cat). There was a shock however when it came to light that the other joint winners included Ali Smith and Andy Mills. Clearly Sue, Debbie and their respective children carried the men to victory! Very disappointing on the evening was hockey veteran Phil McKeown who lost interest in the evening when he realised Sue Barker had failed to turn up to read the questions!

The SQUASH teams have also started the second half of the season in fine form. The men's 1st and 2nd XI, and the ladies 1st XI have won all their games in 2010. They stand fourth, third and fourth respectively and all have a good chance of promotion. The Junior squash coaching on a Sunday afternoon is proving a great success with new coach Laurie Jones putting the kids through their paces. There are still a few places available in the various age groups - please contact Nick Mason on 07903237008 for full details.

The Tennis season is only just around the corner but there are many hardy souls who enjoy the game throughout the winter. One such group play on a Thursday morning and are always keen for new people to turn up. If you think you would enjoy a game and a coffee please contact Annie Gwyn on 336 2882.

On Wednesday 17th February at 7pm the Club is being presented with the areas first defibrillator kit which will be available for emergencies to club members and the local community. Lawrence McNeight and his family have raised the awareness for the need for this life saving machine after the loss of a family member. The Craig Hodgkinson Foundation was set up in memory of Craig who tragically died of a heart attack in 2006 aged just 27. We are very honoured to have been selected for this donation and the event will give the Club the opportunity to thank Craig's father John for this generous gift, and the ambulance service who provided the training.

And so to the bar.......

The F.A. Cup takes centre stage this weekend but all the local clubs have decided to concentrate on the league this year! As a result the Six Nations is likely to attract more interest after England's excellent win over Wales. There are two minor games on Saturday but the big match kicks off on Sunday at 2.30pm when Italy host England. There is a function on Sunday afternoon but this takes place in the Sports Bar so the BIG SCREEN will be down and dangling in the Cranston.

The Riff Raff are holding their annual dinner in the Cranston on Friday night, when Yozzer Hughes will be in control, Bruce Lindsay will attempt to drink the Club dry of red wine and Brian McKowen will attempt to make a satellite link from somewhere on the planet!

Next Saturday sees the long awaited debut of local band 'JUST'. Tickets have all but gone with just a few returns remaining. Please contact me on the address below for details.

Until next week

SIBERIAN CONDITIONS LEAVE MEMBERS ICED UP

The Arctic conditions continue to cause problems both on and off the sporting arena's following another day of solid snow fall. Hockey, squash and Bridge were all cancelled last week and with the astro still yet to be located, this weekends fixtures are already in doubt. The forecast for the weekend does suggest that temperatures may rise and a thaw could set in. This will be great news for Anne Beddard who should finally be able to retrieve her car from the fully iced up Club Managers car parking space. Fortunately normal clamping regulations have been suspended due to the adverse conditions but a small donation to the Junior Cricket Section will be greatly received!!

Should the outdoor sports be cancelled again this weekend there is at least some excellent on screen entertainment to take its place. It all kicks off on Saturday afternoon when STOKE entertain LIVERPOOL in the Premier League. The match kicks off at 12.45pm and the bar will be open for the game.

The final Test Match in South Africa starts tomorrow and whilst the playing times are a little early for the bar to be open, we should be able to catch the final session after the football on Saturday.

Later in the day the BLUE HALF OF MERSEYSIDE takes on high flying MANCHESTER CITY at Goodison Park. The programme starts at 5pm and is live and exclusive on ESPN. There is no function in the Cranston this Saturday so the BIG SCREEN will be down and dangling! No doubt all the Liverpool supporters will remain on site to see if their close neighbours can do them a favour in the race for a Europa Cup spot.

Hopefully conditions will improve enough by the weekend to allow our new squash coach LAURIE JONES to start the Junior Coaching weekends. This starts on Sunday at 4pm and for full details please contact Nick Mason on 07903237008. We have hundreds of budding Wimbledon stars at Neston - I am sure many of these will be just as good at squash. Why not come down and give it a go? The cost of a twelve week block course is just £30!

Dates for your Diary:

On Friday the 5th February Tony Bush will be holding a sporting quiz in the Cranston from 7.30pm. The event is open to all members and their friends and will include light refreshments. Full details will follow shortly on the Hockey section website, but if you would like to secure your team's place please contact Tony ASAP.

On Saturday the 20th February 'JUST' will be performing live in the Cranston. Tickets for the event are selling fast for this popular band who regularly play at Jack Rabbit's in Hoylake. Please contact me by return on the e-mail below to secure your places.

Despite the weather the cricket season is only three months away and the section have already arranged two pre/early season functions. On Friday the 26th March the annual Hot Pot takes place, and on Friday 23rd April an early season Sportsman's Lunch will be held in the Cranston. The services of three former Rugby Internationals have been secured to speak at the events. Ex Rugby League players Barrie McDermott and Terry O'Connor at the Hot Pot and Rugby Union legend Gareth Chilcott at the lunch. For further information please contact Bob Cooke on 07723914566.

For full details of events over the coming weeks please check the Manager's Diary on the Club website www.nestoncricketclub.co.uk

This will be the last update until early February due to a staff training course in elephant washing. Should you wish to check the availability of the Club's facilities during this period please contact the office number 336 4199 - option 1.

Until next time

NCC SHORT LISTED TO HOLD WINTER OLYMPICS

For once Parkgate seems to have lost its 'micro-climate' tag and has succumbed to the weather that the rest of the country has to suffer!

This Thursday's county squash fixtures have been cancelled and even tonight's rugged bridge players have had to postpone due to snow on the terrace! There is due to be some friendly hockey on Sunday but this is also subject to a pitch inspection once it can be found!

THE CLUB IS OPEN DURING THE DAY TIME FOR THOSE WISHING TO VENTURE DOWN, BUT PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THE

CLUB DRIVE
RESEMBLES THE CRESTA RUN AND THE CAR PARK A SET FROM DANCING ON ICE. PLEASE BE VERY CAREFUL AS WE HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO CLEAR THE MAJORITY OF THE SNOW AND ICE.

The bar will be open tonight but will be closing by 8.30pm. It is likely to be the same tomorrow evening unless there is a major heatwave! The bar will open on Saturday at 4pm and will close by 8.30pm.

If the weather should improve dramatically I will advise of any changes to the above.

If anybody fancies making the worlds largest snow man Saturday afternoon before the bar opens seems as good a time as any!

Tickets for the band night are going quickly with a lot of interest from non-members who have seen 'JUST' performing at local venues. The tickets for the event on the 20th February are now available. Please contact me on the e-mail below to secure yours.

Please note that due to the weather the Junior Squash coaching will now start on Sunday 17th January at 4pm. For full details please contact Nick Mason on 07903237008.

The Thursday Group's first meet of 2010 will be January 14th when a humorous presentation from Michael Corfe entitled 'Create a Garden' will take place at 2pm. On the following Thursday Pat Wood presents 'Back to Back - my travels' at the same time in the Cranston. All members and guests are welcome with entrance just £1 which includes tea and biscuits.

Until next week
